How to build a strong team identity

How do you build and maintain a strong team identity? This blog will cover some of the key things regarding this.

1. Establish a team purpose, values, a vision and goals

Why do we exist? (Purpose)

What is important to us? (Values)

What do we want? (Vision)

What are we working towards? (Goals)

These four questions guide a team towards becoming a high performing, collaborative team.  Creating a common goal and values is very important in order to connect the team through them and have a clear future to work towards. This helps a team with effectiveness, organisation and motivation.

These four questions are things that are not set and you will continue to clarify and refine these as you progress through the competition. You will use these questions as a team to assess how things are going, decide on next steps, and check that you are still on the path to where you want to go as a team.

2. Team colours

Team colours are a very important part of creating a powerful and dynamic team identity. It is important to make sure that the colours you choose represent something about your team or the things that you value. Not only this, but it is also very important to make sure that you have your team colours on absolutely EVERYTHING. As an example, if you have a look at our website or social media accounts, they all have our team colours EVERYWHERE! We believe this is one of the most important things for creating a strong impression of our team on spectators. Here are some examples for what some of our team colours stand for:

Orange- motivation, passion, energy

Black- sleek, elegance, dignity

Yellow- positive attitude, innovation, motivation, ideas etc

White- purity, faith

And lastly, here is an example of our Instagram with our team colours constantly displayed.

3. Consistency

Maintaining consistency in everything such as colours, fonts, some designs and the overall all your visual and written assets is very important. This gives your audience a familiarity and comfort with your branding and makes your team stand out even easier. Consistency is also needed for the team itself as it gives the team clarity and helps avoid confusion. This is also needed in your vision, goals etc because these are some of the guidelines for your team and it is very important in order to keep the team focused and motivated towards the shared goals.

In our next article, we will be continuing with team identity and we will be focusing on the importance of commitment, appreciation, trust and dealing with conflict.
